George V gold Sovereign 1926-S MS65 PCGS, Sydney mint, KM29, Fr-38, Marsh-286, S-4003. An iconic denomination, in a seldom encountered Proof format, in a superior state of presentation. Truly a flawless beauty, showing the classic portrait of George V with intense sharpness throughout, cradled by glowing fields that are tinged with honey coloration and just a touch of tone. The reverse design, the ever-popular St. George and the dragon illustration, shows typical softness in the center, with definition that becomes bolder as it extends towards the peripheries. Aside from trace instances of chatter, the fields remain highly pleasing for the assigned grade. If past sales are any indication of future performance, the most recent example that we sold in our 2016 NYINC sale hammered for $40,000, and that piece was one grade less (MS64) than this coin. This current offering is one of two Proof examples of this date to reach the Gem plateau, and as such, should easily surpass our high estimate. An absolute must for the Australian Sovereign specialist looking to acquire this date in the finest state of preservation.
