Matthias gold 10 Ducat 1616 AU50 NGC, Vienna mint, KM211, Fr-99. Matthias Fellner as mintmaster. Struck in a Taler module from the dies for Dav-3046, this lightly circulated example is quite rare and among the finest extant that we can locate, with sharp remaining details. The obverse fields bear some light marks and wispy lines, but lack any heavy smoothing or chasing. Ever-so-slightly off-center, the reverse appears better preserved than the obverse despite the minor weakness of strike to the upper-left quadrant, with very clean fields for the grade and much luster.

Matthias' rise to the office of Holy Roman Emperor was a slow one. Following several instances of inept governance by his elder brother, Emperor Rudolf II, Matthias was able to gradually strip him of all of his offices: Archduke of Austria and King of Hungary and Croatia in 1608 and King of Bohemia in 1611. With only the title of Holy Roman Emperor, but no lands or armies to call upon, Rudolf II was essentially powerless until his death in 1612, upon which Matthias was elected emperor, an ofice he held until his death in 1619.

Estimate: 70000-80000 USD
