João V gold 6400 Reis 1733-B AU50 NGC, Bahia mint, KM-unlisted, LMB-unlisted, Prober-Unlisted. Unique. Reverse Shield of the 4th Type. In the period of 1727 to 1733, coin production was scarce at the mint in Bahia, in the city of Salvador. One of the main reason is that the mines in Minas Gerais were producing gold at an unprecedented rate. Pecas, Dobras and Dobroes were being minted in droves. As such, any 6400 Reis (or Peça) from Bahia (B) from this period are extremely rare with less than a handful of coins in existence for each date and shield type combinations. In the past decade, we have had the privilege of offering two specimens from this era:

- a 1732-B in MS61 sold for $146,875.00 in January 2015

- a 1727-B in AU Details (Surface Hairlines) for $126,500.00 in January 2012

For decades, there has been speculation about the existence of a 1733-B 6400 Reis. Mostly because minting of the 4th type shield variety took place every year from 1732 to 1750. We had not, until now, confirmed the existence of this date, as such, this is quite a historic moment and unusual occurrence where a previously unknown date is confirmed for the most significant issue, perhaps of 18th century numismatics, the Portuguese Peca, or Joe.

A Note from Cristiano Bierrenbach: in my 30+ years of collecting, researching and studying Brazilian coins, never have I felt the numismatic joy as I did when I held in my hands a few months ago the 1733-B 6400 Reis. Solving a nearly 300 year old numismatic enigma is something we coin lovers live for. This is a historic, charismatic, hugely important coin that we have the tremendous honor and pleasure to bring to the world.

Estimate: 75000-125000 USD
