Lower Canada copper "Commercial Change" 1/2 Penny Token ND (c.1815) VF20 PCGS, LC-59A (large bust), Br-1007. Struck in coin rotation. Obv. Bust of Papineau? right. Rev. COMMERCIAL-CHANGE. Weakly struck on the reverse, as are all of the few remaining examples of this type. The obverse portrait is complete, with only normal wear, while the reverse legend is weak in the center. This is the only example of the type certified by PCGS. Extremely rare. Ex. John Temple Collection.
There was some error in the identification of the obverse portrait of this elusive token, but McLachlan identified it as Louis-Joseph Papineau, a Montrel Lawayer, politician, and the leader of the reformist Patriote movement before the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837-38. His arrest was ordered by governor Lord Gosworth and he fled to New York City. He remained in exile until returning in 1845. It is not definite that the portrait on the token is Papineau, but it greatly resembles him and it seems reasonable that it could be his portrait.
