Lower Canada "Mule" Penny Token ND (1837) Fine Details (Tooled) PCGS Genuine, Br-528 (Charlton-PC4)/KM-Tn211. Struck in medal rotation. Obv. Type of the 1852 Quebec Bank Token Penny. Rev. Type of Australia, Smith, Peate & Co. (Sydney, NSW) Penny. This lot includes both the mule Penny, and an example of the Australia Penny. The piece offered here has scratches on both sides, with indentations on both sides as if having been hit by a small, blunt object. This rare mule of the Canada obverse and Australia obverse is not a thing of beauty, but it is exceedingly rare. The only record we can find of this type being offered is in Baldwin's sale 72, on October 4, 2011, Lot 261, where a F/VF example brought 5600 British Pounds hammer. The description in the Baldwin's catalog stated, "The cataloguer has been unable to find any record of this token selling but it is thought to be the second of only two known."
