Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'or 1702-A MS62 NGC, Paris mint, KM335.1, Fr-435, Gad-261. A coin with incredible appeal and in a level of technical quality that is so often craved, yet very seldom encountered. The lightly antiqued golden surfaces are truly pleasing, with touches of haymark tone across the obverse, and the design elements are unmistakably Mint State, showing no softness to the strike. Closer review confirms a boldly rendered portrait of the King, with all facial details attractively detailed, and a central reverse motif that is totally emboldened throughout. While difficult to value in this exceptional Mint State, we note the sale of a lesser example, graded AU55 by NGC, hammering for 11,000 CHF in a November 2015 Maison Palombo auction. This superior example should therefore prove a significant find for the high-end collector of Louis XIV gold issues.
