Saxony. Johann Georg I gold 2 Ducat 1616 MS64 PCGS, Dresden mint, KM127, cf. Fr-2642 for this type in single Ducat weight. Struck for the first time as gifts for Christmas in 1616, the "Sophiendukat" became popular as a gift for baptisms and was restruck continuously until 1872. The single Ducats are fairly common, but the double Ducat is extremely rare. The present offering bears light-reddish tone over lustrous surfaces. The crowned monogram and reverse representation of the Holy Trinity are exquisitely detailed and betray just a hint of cabinet friction.
