Henry VIII (1509-1547) gold Sovereign 1538-1541 AU Details (Obverse Graffiti) NGC, Tower mint, Second coinage of 1526-1544, Lis over Sunburst mm on obverse, Arrow mm on reverse, S-2267, N-1782 (VR), Schneider-573. x (lis/sunburst) hЄnRICVS ‡ DЄI ‡ GRΛCIA ‡ RЄX | x ΛnGLIЄ ‡ ЄT ‡ FRΛnC' x DnS' ‡ hIB' x, Henry enthroned facing, holding orb and scepter; portcullis below / (arrow) ‡ IhЄSVS : ΛVTЄM : TRΛnSIЄnS : PЄR : MЄDIVM : ILLORVM : IBΛT x, arms on Tudor rose. Well-struck overall with light tone and some residual luster in protected areas. A few faint scratches are noted in the left obverse field as well as a small "V" cut into the robes of Henry just below his knees. A very rare offering with the reverse legend, "And Jesus, passing through the midst of them, went His way," reminding the reader, perhaps not so subtly, of the divine right of kings.
