Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound 1595-1598 MS64 PCGS, Tower mint, Sixth issue, Key over Woolpack mm on both sides, S-2534, N-2008, Schneider-800 var (same obverse die but pellet stops on reverse). (key) ELIZABETH : D : G : ANG'. FRA'. ET : HIB'. REGINA., BC bust 7A / (key) SCVTVM • FIDEI • PROTEGET • EAM •, crowned arms with "E" and "R" to either side. A seemingly singular example of this scarce issue, beautifully struck and unbelievably well-preserved. The fully realized and needle-sharp details on the portrait are especially remarkable. A faint, reddish patina has settled upon mostly unmarked surfaces enlivened by full, vivid luster. Scattered traces of die work and rust assert minimal influence on the devices and serve as aids to die matching. An example of this type with a fraction of the eye-appeal of the present offering, certified MS62 NGC in our January 2014 auction of the Eric P. Newman collection (lot 30119), hammered for $35,000 ($41,125 with BP). In fact, this specimen is the finest of this type to have been certified by either PCGS or NGC. Exceptionally rare this fine and an eminently scarce opportunity for the connoisseur of the finest examples of Renaissance gold.
Privately purchased from Spink in 1981.

Estimate: 50000-60000 USD
