Great Britain
William & Mary gold 5 Guineas 1691 MS63 NGC, Royal mint, KM479.1, S-3422. An absolutely stunning piece, this coin is highly lustrous and free of surface abrasions. In August of 2016, we sold an MS63 "elephant and castle" 5 guineas from 1692 in a PCGS MS63 holder for a record $220,000 hammer price. Though a slightly different type, according to the Standard Catalog of British Coins, the regular Five Guineas of this period, and those produced from gold acquired from the mines operated by the Royal African Company (the "elephant and castle" type) are worth the same amount. The coin on offer here, however, is arguably more attractive than the specimen we sold this past August, even if it is technically the same grade. While the other coin has a number of annealing marks and small areas of discoloration, this coin is basically free of any such blemishes. Considering that this is the first time a Mint State-graded example of this date has ever appeared at public auction, we would not be surprised in the least to see a new record for this type be achieved with this sale.
