George II Proof 1/2 Crown 1746 PR66★ NGC, Royal mint, KM584.2, S-3696. An all-around stunning piece, with no piece of comparable quality having been sold in recent memory. The closest example we could find was an NGC PR66 which sold in our January, 2016 sale for $9,000 hammer. Though technically its equal in terms of pure numerical grade, the piece on offer now has much greater eye appeal. Though that can often be dismissed as merely a subjective opinion, the fact that NGC saw fit to award this coin with its coveted, and elusive, star designation makes it nearly an indisputable fact. But putting the holder aside, one needs to only look at this coin in hand to see why it is among the finest, if not the single finest, known example of the type. Blazing blue, green, and purple iridescence with old cabinet toning and nearly perfect surfaces makes this a true connoisseur's coin.
