Great Britain
George VI copper-nickel Matte Proof Crown 1951 PR64 NGC, Royal mint, KM880, S-4111. A modern rarity that is hardly ever encountered in the marketplace, this is the first example of this type that we have handled since January of 2004, when we offered a partial set. Indeed, though the so-called "VIP Proofs" appear at auction every so often (distinguished by their frosted cameo relief), the Standard Catalog of World Coins notes that only one or two examples of the "Matte Proofs" are known. This figure may be disputed but it is clear that appearances of this type at auction are not to be taken lightly by enthusiasts of British Proofs.
