Charles IV gold 4 Escudos 1789 NG-M XF45 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM48. A charming representative of this very rare issue (transitional type for Charles IV with bust of Charles III) of which around 5 are known, this being only the third offering of this date that we can recall in the last 20 years. Of those seen, this example may in fact be the finest in terms wear, with the ex. Santa Maria Collection specimen (Heritage 1/15, Lot 29820) that we sold showing considerably more friction on the bust, while the ex. Caballero de las Yndias example (Aureo 4/2009, lot 287, reportedly ex J. Schulman 2/1957, lot 1975) appears rather similar. On this piece, some original luster remains around the protected peripheral letters, while orange-gold tone has settled there as well. The outer denticles are as sharp are we have seen, however the strike failed to bring full detail to the reverse shield. Despite this slight imperfection, a coin that remains extremely desirable, and as the finest graded at NGC or PCGS, one that would make a great addition to an elite cabinet of Spanish Colonial coinage.

Estimate: 5000-8000 USD
