Isle of Man
Douglas. Douglas Bank silver Proof 5 Shillings Token 1811 PR63 PCGS, Birmingham mint, KM-Tn14, Prid-46A, Davis-1. Engraved by T. Halliday. An absolutely stunning example of this rare issue with magnificent iridescent highlights bringing the argent-toned surfaces to life. Few marks of any consequence are noted, the most obvious perhaps being a pair of ancient scratches in the upper-left quadrant of the obverse in the legend. The strike has brought to bear needle-sharp details in the depiction of Peel Castle, a most charming scene.

The rarity of these tokens is underlined by the brief existence of the issuing enterprise, the Douglas Bank. It was opened in November of 1811 by three partners, two of whom sued each other out of business when one attempted to leave the island, resulting in the closure of the bank a mere three months later in January of 1812.

Estimate: 6000-7000 USD
