Papal States. Pius IX gold 100 Lire 1866-R MS62 PCGS, Rome mint, KM1383, Fr-278, Berman-3330. Mintage: 1,115. Visually outstanding, with an obverse that expresses a vibrant overlay of magenta color and a reverse that is glowing with original, lightly aged golden tone. Both sides contain an ample amount of luster that surrounds the Mint-State designs, and closer inspection reveals near-choice detailing throughout the raised elements. Fine flyspeck ticks are noted across the surfaces, but as a whole do little to detract from the overall allure of this offering. Seldom seen finer, with only two examples certified higher (both MS63 at NGC), and an issue that is frequently absent from collections of 19th century world gold. Well preserved and in a certified presentation that warrants great attention.
