Sardinia. Vittorio Emanuele I gold 80 Lire 1821 (Eagle)-L MS61 NGC, Turin mint, KM119. Mintage: 965. Struck in the final year of Victor Emanuele's reign prior to abdicating the throne to his younger brother Carlo Felice. This incredibly scarce, one-year type was produced in a very small quantity and features the well-coiffed portrait of the King, fully detailed, and set atop wide expanses that are full of golden tone. While other examples of this denomination are usually marred with surfaces abrasions or with raised elements that are affected by wear and friction, this offering is miraculously absent any of those things, as the fields contain only insignificant flyspecks and the bold designs are rendered to full completion. In its entirety, the honey-toned planchet is extremely pleasing, and as a singular issue, this offering is very much a conditional rarity. Currently the only Mint-State example certified by either NGC or PCGS, and for the Italian States specialist, a phenomenal representative as such.
