Venice. Francesco Loredan gold Scudo della croce ND (1752-1762)-GAC AU Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Venice mint, KM-Pn151, cf. Paolucci-11 for type in silver. Giacomo Antonio Contarini as mintmaster. A very rare offering of this Scudo issue in gold, likely struck in a weight of 12 Zecchini, but not certainly as we have been able to locate similar examples in both 10 and 12 Zecchini and we cannot be certain of the exact weight of this coin due to the NGC holder. Additionally, the Paolucci number on the NGC insert is incorrect, as 138 conforms neither to a catalog or page number of anything related to Francesco Loredan in either of the two Paolucci catalogs. The present offering is well-struck overall with a few light marks noted in the fields, and rather bright from a past cleaning although there are no particularly egregious hairlines or brush marks. Rare in any grade and certain to elicit much interest.
Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
