Mexico
Guatemala. Type II countermark (1839) on Mexican 1717 Mo-J Philip V "Royal" 8 Reales XF Details (Holed) NGC, KM105.1 (upon KM-R47), Lazaro-73 (R3). 39mm/26.79g. Quite possibly receiving a conservative details grade from NGC, with strong definition remaining over well-struck, medium gray surfaces. A neatly formed hole was placed at 12 o'clock, and along with several marks near the first 7 in the date, they constitute the only notable imperfections over the surfaces. Validated as circulating specie by Guatemala in 1839, with a single, boldly placed sun over mountains stamp in the absolute center of the obverse shield. Very rare as both an example of this date in "Royal" form, and in its pairing with the Guatemalan validation. Thusly, an item of immense desirability for both the collector of Mexico as well as the Guatemala or Central American Specialist.
Ex. Richard Stuart Collection

Estimate: 35000-45000 USD
