USA Administration Mule 5 Centavos 1918-S MS62 NGC, San Francisco mint, KM173, Basso-113a, Allen-4.08b. A major mint error, created by the pairing of a 5 centavos obverse and the reverse die from the 20 centavos denomination, with the subtle differences between the dies resulting in most examples experiencing heavy circulation prior to discovery. In Mint State, the issue is a coveted rarity, and this is one of the finer examples observed, with sharp highpoint detail and surfaces that display streaky orange-gold patina as is often acquired on copper-nickel issues. A couple marks, and a tiny lamination near the mintmark define the grade. Only the third Mint State example we have offered with an NGC-graded MS64 bringing $42,125 in our April 2014 auction, while a PCGS-graded MS61 realized $14,100 in our NYINC sale last year.
