Peter I gold 2 Roubles 1720 MS63 PCGS, Red mint, KM158.5, Fr-91, Bitkin-113, Diakov-24. Obv. Laureate, draped, and armored bust right, with palm branch on chest. Rev. St. Andrew standing facing, wearing nimbus crown and drapery, and carrying the saltire cross on which he was crucified. A wondrous specimen, with exceptionally sharp detail and centering of strike, this piece offers a pleasing golden-orange tone, with hints of cabernet near the devices. Highly choice, and possessing a quality rarely encountered in Russian coinage of this period, this enchanting issue from Peter I 'the Great' maintains a great deal of stunning eye-appeal, and is worthy of much consideration. Though lacking the present coin's charming toning patterns, a similar ungraded example sold in Stack's January 2007 sale (lot 3302), and realized a hammer of $26,000.
Estimate: 32000-36000 USD
