Alexander I gold "Catherine Pavlovna Visits London" Medal 1814 MS61 NGC, by T. Wyon on the truncation, this is the famous British engraver Thomas Wyon, Diakov383.1 (R3), Reichel-3291 (AR), Smirnov-unlisted, BHM-845, 28.3g, 35mm, plain edge. Obv. Laureate bust of Alexander I right, with inscription, "ALEXANDER RUSSIARUM IMPERATOR." Rev. Britannis seated, with trident, shield, and laurel branches. Date below in Roman numerals. Inscription, "OB. ADVENT. M. D. CATHARIN AE. HOSP. GRATISSIM AE." In exergue, "GAUDENS BRITANNIA-MDCCCXIV." Struck to commemorate the visit of Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna to London in 1814 for the inauguration of the Catherine II hospital. Superbly struck, with full, satiny luster, orange-gold patina, reflective fields, and moderate contact marks. We can only reference two other examples of this very rare medal over the last 15 years, and neither of these was as nice as this piece.
