Aragon. Juan II (1453-1464) gold Escudo ND MS62 NGC, Zaragoza mint, Fr-29a (under Catalonia), Cayon-1797 var (reverse legend), MEC 6-238 var (matching reverse but obverse of Cayon-1798). IOΛNNES : DEI : GRΛCIΛ : CΛR, crowned bust facing holding trident with fish and "C" in right field / REX : ΛRΛGONVM : N : S : V :, crowned arms. Struck in Aragon for Catalonia, this rare piece has been exquisitely preserved, with beautiful reddish-gold tone softening velvety luster. A couple of the king's facial features have ghosted into the reverse arms, but all of the major devices, particularly on the obverse, are sharp and well-realized.
