Philip III 50 Reales 1620 Aqueduct-A AU55 NGC, Segovia mint, Cal-81, KM65. Aqueduct mintmark for Segovia, with A (with cross) assayer. 73.1mm/173.09g. Very rare, with perhaps 13 or 14 confirmed examples including those impounded in public collections. The actual authorized mintage by the King was of only 100 pieces: 50 for Luis Jeronimo Fernandez de Cabrera y Bobadilla, Count of Chinchon and an aristocrat with close ties to the Spanish Throne, and 50 for one Pedro Messia, forebear of an important dynasty of Marquises. Fernandez de Cabrera y Bobadilla would be appointed Viceroy of Peru between 1629 and 1639.
This specimen of 1620 is an outstanding example of the type with fully original chocolate red patina. Bold strike with problem free surfaces.
