Republic "Montevideo Siege" Peso 1844 MS62 NGC, Montevideo mint, KM5. Mintage: 1,500 (for entire issue). Medal Alignment variety. An extremely popular one-year Latin issue that is infrequently seen at the Mint State grade, and is even rarer when struck in the atypical medallic die alignment. While not always observed on this issue, the raised design shows crisply executed on this piece, with eye-catching prooflike reflectivity in the fields on both sides. Light parallel planchet adjustments remain in the background on the reverse and likely precluded the Select grade. Altogether, one of the nicer examples we've offered in recent memory and a coin that has the ability to stand alone as a coin of importance or blend seamlessly into an advanced collection of crown-sized issues.
