Valentinian III, Western Roman Emperor (AD 425-455). AV tremissis (1.47 gm). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 5/5. Rome or Ravenna, AD 425-430. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valentinian right / Wreath with straight, bound crossbar enclosing cross, COMOB beneath. RIC --, cf. 2070 (same obv. legend, unknown mint, later style). Sharply struck and attractive, struck from dies of unusually good style for so late a ruler.
The seems to be an unrecorded variant from early in Valentinian III's reign. The obverse legend omits the praenomen PL normally seen with this ruler, and style of this tremissis seems closely tied that of Honorius (AD 393-423) rather than the plumper, flatter portraits common for Valentinian III; also, the wreath on the reverse is of much better style than that of RIC 2070, assigned to an unknown mint, which has the same obverse legend but is much different stylistically.
