Lorraine. Jacques Callot de Nancy silver Death Medal 1635, by Dassier, even though Krause lists Lorraine under Germany for this period, it was actually an independent state and a buffer between France and Germany. Obv. Bust of Callot left. Rev. Tomb with inscription GRAVEUR M-1635. Superbly struck in high relief, with near-flawless surfaces and splendid original luster with silver and russet patina. Rare in this stunning Gem condition.
Callot was a baroque printmaker from the Duchy of Lorraine. He was one of the first great artists to practice the graphic arts exclusively.
