Catherine II bronze "Partitions of Poland" Medal ND (1793) AU - Damaged, Diakov-229.1, HCz-7898. 78mm/195.94g. By. C. Leberecht and JB Gass. Obv. Laureate bust right. Rev. Crowned double eagle holding two maps with the years 1772 and 1793. The First Partition of Poland was decided on August 5, 1772. Two decades later, Russian and Prussian troops entered the Commonwealth again and the Second Partition was signed on January 23, 1793. The Third Partition of Poland took place on October 24, 1795, in reaction to the unsuccessful Polish Kosciuszko Uprising the previous year. With this partition, the Commonwealth ceased to exist. An grand medal with two rubbing spots on Catherine's portrait that have resulted in unnatural reddish coloration. Otherwise quite nice.
