ANCIENT COINS, Roman Imperial Coinage, Nero, Sestertius, Rome, 64, laureate bust left, nero clavd caesar avg ger p m tr p imp p p, rev. triumphal arch; above, the Emperor in facing quadriga flanked by figures of Victory and Pax; two small figures of soldiers on sides of the platform; on left side of arch, statue of Mars holding spear and round shield, s c in field, 26.90g (RIC 144; BMC 184; C 306; Sear 1962). Neatly struck and well-centred, good very fine, dark brown patina £800-1,000

The triumphal arch on this coin was erected by Nero between 58 and 62 to commemorate campaigns by Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo against the Parthians. Located on the slope of the Capitoline Hill, it was probably destroyed soon after Nero's death in 68. The only known representations of the arch are those found on coinage
