Abbasid Caliphate. Harun al-Rashid (AH 170-193/786-809 AD). AR Dirham, al-Muhammadiyya (in Armenia), AH 189. Citing `Ubayd below. 2.9 gms. Naming al-Amin Muhammad as heir. A number of issues bearing the mint name al-Muhammadiyya were struck between AH 176-193, usually with a name above or below the reverse legend, often both. Stylistically they are unrelated to standard issues of al-Muhammadiyya (al-Rayy), and are clearly from another mint (which can be referred to as al-Muhammadiyya II). Michael Bates has tentatively assigned these special issues to the region of Armenia. Die-links and other numismatic evidence point to this as an accurate assignment. The coin above is also known with "Ubayd" above and "Mukhlad" below (from the same obverse die). It is possible that this "al-Muhammadiyya" was a workshop connected to the mint of Ma`din Bajunays. Rare. Slight find stain in margin, otherwise Choice About as Struck.
