China, Republic, Hsu Shih Chang. . Silver Dollar, Year 10 (1921), Tientsin mint, ref. L&M-956,Kann-676b; Hsu-20.. . . Extremely fine, almost UNC Graded NGC MS62, one of the finest known examples of this extremely rare variety; NGC Census shows only a couple graded MS62 and only one exemplary graded MS63 of this variety type. Extremely rare. . . . . The modern (Republican era) Chinese milled coinage includes only three types whose respective center piece design features natural scenery. The other two coin types are the 1949 Kweichow 'Bamboo' dollar and the 1949 Kwangsi 'Elephant Trunk Mountain' silver coin.. . . . Xu Shi Chang was the President of the Republic of China from October 10, 1918 until June 2, 1922. In 1921, on the third year of his premiership and 67th birthday, the Tientsin Mint struck a silver dollar to commemorate these two events. The double celebration was auspiciously named "Benevolence and Longevity". . . . . The obverse shows Xu in three quarter profile wearing civilian clothes and adorned with a medal. The reverse shows Huai Ren Hall in Zhongnanhai, with the Chinese characters for '"Benevolence and Longevity" to the left and well-wishers at right. . The Chinese legend states 'The Ninth Month of the Tenth Year of the Republic of China". . . . . There are two versions of this issue, one without the Chinese characters for "Commemorative Coin" , such as this one, in the Chinese legend and one with it. The extremely rare variety without the extra wording "Commemorative Coins", such as this coin, was given by Xu to give to friends and relatives. As a notable example, when Xu attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Union Medical College Hospital, he gave out this coin with the recipient's name engraved on it as a gesture of respect. . . . The intricate, detailed and beautiful engraving makes this coin highly desirable. The extremely scarce variety type thereof coupled with a strong strike and high grade qualifies it further for a center classic rarity in any of the finest China Republic collections.. NGC MS62
