China, Republic, Sun Yat-Sen. . Silver ìMausoleumî Dollar , Year 16 (1927). ref. Kann-609; L&M-85. Obv. bust facing, rev. sun settings behind hills and mausoleum. Extremely Fine, graded NGC MS62. A beautiful boldy striked coin on both observe and reverse for a extremely scarce and very difficult type to find in MS. . . . . This iconic coin was created to commemorate the death of Sun Yat-Sen, and issued almost two years before the marble grand mausoleum erected in his honour was finalized on Purple Mountain, East of Nanjing. The transfer of Sun Yat-Sen's coffin only happened in 1929. . Although earlier Republic Dollars are praised for their detailed designs, the engraving work of the Austrian medalist Richard Placht (Vienna Mint) for this coin spurred many criticisms, starting from the non-resemblance of the portrait to missing elements in the final structure of the mausoleum due to his work based on early architectural sketches (such as the impressive final 392 stairs truncated on the reverse). . Regardless, this type Dollar remains today one of the most sought-after coins of the Republic coinage, double-featuring one of the major political figures recognized widely within China and internationally as a key leader in the emergence of the Republic and one of the most visited contemporary Chinese monuments.. . .
