Great Britain, Charles II (1660-85). . Five-Guineas, 1684, gold, obv. second laureate bust right, rounded truncated, legend CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA. Toothed border both sides, rev. inverted die axis, four crowned cruciform shields, four scepters in angles with four interlinked C's in center, date at top, legend MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX, 1684. Raised letter edge inscription DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI TRICESIMO SEXTO. Ref. Schneider 427; MCE.29; S.3331. Variety without elephant.. . . The largest gold piece within the British coinage from its early on-start years as it started being minted in 1668.. . 1684 is the last year for the Charles II type and although a common date, it is very difficult to find in high grades. This good very fine (VF+) lacks some mint luster, and some surfaces may have been altered early on, but remains a still very desirable coin in the surviving census of the "variety without elephant" type, beautifully designed by John Roettier, who is still regarded as one of the most talented of the British engravers. . . . .. Good Very fine VF+, lacking mint luster
