Russia, Tzarin Katharina II, 1770 Silver Medal. . Silver medal, 1770, by T. Iwanov, mounted, 24.28 gr., diameter 39.20mm, ref. Diakov 147.1 . Obv. bust to right, rev. four Russian ships, and in the background burning Turkish ships.. . This compensation medal was awarded to the Russian navy officers who fought during the naval battle on July 5-7, 1770 at Chesma in the Aegean Sea. Following two days of fierce battle, the Russian defeated the Turks, destroyed the entire Ottoman fleet, and changed the course of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774 in their favour. Following this memorable defeat, the Russian conquered Crimea in 1771. A wave of revolts in Syria and Egypt further destabilized the Turkish regime and led to its end in 1773.. . Very fine and very rare in such condition as it was meant to be worn as a decoration. An iconic Russian piece for an historical battle, which definitively changed the course of the Ottoman Empire in late XVIIIth century.. very fine, very rare in such condition with naval battlefield as a reverse.
