Jewish War against the Romans, countermarked eighth shekel struck year 69 C.E. in Jerusalem (GBC 1369) 4.03 g.
A unique eighth shekel of the highest importance, overstruck by a countermark of the 3rd Roman legion. The legion III is mentioned on some very rare coins and countermarks of coins struck in Bostra (Arabia). The Spijkerman 5a coin of Antonius Pius has a clear oblong countermark also depicting 'III'. It is not the same countermark as the coin we offer today, but it is the same 'III'. Thanks to David Hendin for his help in the description of this coin. Estimate: 3,000-4,000
