Lucius Verus Ӕ Sestertius. Rome, AD 165-166. L VERVS AVG ARM PATH MAX, laureate and draped bust right / VICT AVG TR POT VI IMP III COS II, towered figure of Victory flying left, holding open diadem with both hands; S-C across fields. RIC 1452; BMC 1303. 27.14g, 33mm, 10h.
Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare - no example on CoinArchives.
According to RIC, the interesting depiction of Victory 'towered' (i.e. wearing a battlementted crown) seen on this reverse type likely references Seleucia and Ctesiphon, Parthian foundations that were destroyed during the war. Though occuring on coins of both Aurelius and Verus, contrary to the listing of 'Scarce' that RIC gives this type, it is in fact Extremely Rare; none have come to sale in recent years.
