Medals by Subject, Shooting, Public Schools Veterans Challenge Trophy, Wimbledon, struck and engraved Silver Medal, within a massive civic wreath banded with the names of the schools, Bisley 1890, won by Clifton, E S Sinnott 49, G S Sinnott 49, H V James 47, G Pearse 46, S J Tombs 41, 67mm, in case of issue, by Hancocks & Co (makers of the Victoria Cross). As issued.
The competition was shot by squads of five former pupils from each of the participating public schools. Competitors each took ten shots at a target 200 yards distant.
Clifton must have presented a formidable team. A pair of similar medals, sold by DNW (23 June 2005, lot 668), shows for 1890, Lieut E S Sinnott, Major Pearse and Major Tombs and another for 1899, has Major Tombs and Capt E S Sinnott. E S Sinnott served with the 2nd Gloucestershire Royal. Engineers (Volunteers) and by the end of World War I was CMG with rank of Lt Col. Major G S Sinnott's medal group (2nd Glouc R E V) was sold at DNW, 24-25 February (lot 447). (120 - 160 GBP)
