Auf der Rückseite des Medaillons wird der Stratege Polemon genannt, der die Prägung der Medaillone in Smyrna finanziert hat, um seine Loyalität gegenüber Kaiser Hadrian zu demonstrieren. Klose (S. 17f.) verbindet den auf der Rs. der Münze nach rechts schreitenden Stier mit dem Kult der Kybele. Antinoos sei hier mit Attis, dem Geliebten der großen kleinasiatischen Muttergöttin, gleichgesetzt worden.


Twenty-four minting cities in Asia Minor issued sizeable medaillons of Antinous dating from well after his death. They were designed for commorative purposes. The best among them were rare and superbly worked pieces for presentation to favourated individuals in the games, the cult and the cities. Civic worthies like Polemon of Smyrna decicated the medaillons to their compatriots paying for the engraving and even the whole production.
