Charles I. 1625-1649. Posthumous AR shilling in the name of Charles II. 3.74 gm. 29 mm. Pontefract Besieged. June 1648-March 1648/9. (In England the new year began on March 25, the Feast of the Annuciation. Modern dating began in 1752.) Octagonal. Dated 1648. DVM : SPIRO: SPERO ("While I live I hope") around a large crowned CR / Castle with a raised portcullis in the gateway, tower and banner above, cannon protruding on right; CAROLVS SECVNDVS 1648 around; P C on either side of turret; OBS to left. S. 3150. N. 2648. Extremely Fine; fresh surfaces underlying light gray toning, flan trimmed a bit tightly at upper right; particularly sharp details; note the brickwork on the fort and the detail on the crown.

This is the first coin minted after the execution of Charles I, January 30, 1648/9. It was issued by the commander of the Royalist forces at Pontefract, while under siege for the third and last time.
