SICILY. Messana. Circa 455-451 B.C. AR tetradrachm. 17.02 gm. 26 mm. Biga of mules driven right by seated male charioteer, mules crowned by Nike flying right above; olive leaf in exergue / Hare springing right; C above, MESSAN - I - ON (SS retrograde) around. Caltabiano 1993, Series VII, 328 (D142/R136). Randazzo Hoard 195-197 (same dies). HGC 2, 781 (R1). SNG ANS 336 (same reverse die). Good Fine; lightly toned; short old scratch at 9' on edge of obverse; attractive. Interesting reverse die: double-punched when die was made. Rare.
