William and Mary. 1689-1694. Tin halfpenny. 11.45 gm. 28 mm. 1692 (a copper insert in the center of the coin). Their conjoined busts right; GVLIELMVS • ET • MARIA • around / Britannia seated left; BRITAN - NIA around; [16]92 below. Edge: NVMMORVM + + FAMVLVS ª 1692 ++. S. 3449. Peck 576 (R). Near Very Fine for this issue; obverse is clear with the copper insert at William's jaw; there is a small void near the rim at 11; the reverse is not quite as clear and part of the date is illegible. The edge is mostly legible. The coin overall is a dark, almost black color. Peck, commenting about this "often black tone" suggests that "It is possible that English copper at this time may have contained more impurities ...especially sulphur compounds." (p. 153).
