ROMAN REPUBLICAN. M. Junius Brutus (the most famous of Caesar's assassins in 44 B.C.) and L. Cornelius Sulla (Roman general who battled Marius for supremacy). Circa 54 B.C. Plated denarius mule. 2.88 gm. 17 mm. Bearded head of Brutus' ancestor, L. Junius Brutus, consul 509 B.C / Bare head of the dictator L. Cornelius Sulla right (consul 88 B.C.); SVLLA • COS in front. Obverse/Reverse combining dies from two different issues: SRC 397/399. RSC Junia 30/RSC Pompeia 4. Crawford 433/2 / 434/1. Good Very Fine; core showing through on reverse. Good style and lightly toned. Plated denarius mule, obverse 25% off center. Extremely rare.
Fascinating error involving an already extremely rare type. 434/1 bears the only likeness of the dictator Sulla surviving from antiquity, here coupled with the fine portrait on the always popular Brutus type.
