Wingate, James. ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE COINAGE OF SCOTLAND. Glasgow. 1868. Folio. 146 pages of historical and numismatic text. 44 engraved plates of Scottish coins plus four supplementary plates; gold coins and base coins hand colored. Green buckram binding with Wingate's arms embossed on the front. Binding and contents fresh and fine; there is a piece of book tape at the spine between the title page and the dedication page.

A work of love of Scottish numismatics by a committed "amateur" in the European sense of the term, this large format volume has meticulously prepared line engravings of Scottish coins, detailed listings and historic background. It was prepared to expand on Lindsay, the key reference at the time. (Burns, the standard reference, was published in 1887.) Publication was limited to 150 copies. This is a worthwhile volume for anyone interested in the Sottish series. (I will make use of it in the Scottish numismatics section of the course I will be coteaching at the ANA Summer Seminar in 2017. AD)
