His laureate bust right, slight drapery on far shoulder; IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG / Britannia seated facing, resting foot on rock, head on hand, and holding scepter; shield to right; PONT MAX TR POT COS III around, S C across field, BRITANNIA in exergue. RIC II 577b. Fine; slight roughness; brown patina. Very rare.
Struck to commemorate Hadrian's travels around the empire during the early part of his reign. One early stop of these trips was in Britannia, during which he began construction of his famous wall--73 miles across the north of the province--known to this day as Hadrian's Wall.
