His laureate head right; SEVERVS PIVS AVG BRIT / Victory seated left on shield, holding shield and palm; VICTORIAE BRIT. RIC IV.1 335. RSC 731. Very Fine; steel-gray tone; minor deposits on reverse. Scarce.
Septimius Severus died on his last military campaign against the Caledonians on the northern border of Britain. He had a contentious time with Caracalla who helped command the campaign, and after his death at York in February AD 211, Caracalla made peace and the Romans were forced to retreat to Hadrian's Wall.
