ROMAN BRITAIN. Septimius Severus. A.D. 193-211. AR denarius. 3.06 gm. 18 mm. Rome mint. Struck circa A.D. 210-211. His laureate head right; SEVERVS PIVS AVG BRIT / Victory standing facing, head right, holding palm and fastening shield to palm tree to right; VICTORIAE BRIT. RIC IV.1 336. RSC 730. Good Very Fine; bold portrait; flan split at 12; circular countermark or punch behind head, with corresponding bulge on reverse, that looks to have been made at the time of minting; lustrous surfaces under beautiful toning with blue and roseate highlights. Scarce.
