From The Herbert & Aphrodite Rubin Collection; Purchased privately from NFA in the 1980s.
The signed tetradrachms of Syracuse are counted among some of the most desired coins struck in the Classical period. This is due not only to the high quality of the engraving, which produced beautiful and often technically complex portraits of Arethusa as well as action-packed scenes of chariot racing, but to the direct connection established between the possessor of the coin and its creator through the medium of the signature.
