From the Herbert & Aphrodite Rubin Collection; Private purchase from Edward J. Waddell in 1980s.
A wonderful portrait of the last king of the Antigonid dynasty of Macedon in a high Hellenistic style graces the obverse of this tetradrachm. Political missteps and the enmity of Rome forced this tragic king to embark upon the disastrous Third Macedonian War (171-168 BC), which cost him his diadem and resulted in the division of his kingdom into Roman protectorates.
