From The Herbert & Aphrodite Rubin Collection; Purchased privately from H. J. Berk in the 1980s.
The close association of Antiochos IV with Zeus led him to rededicate the Samarian temple on Mount Gerizim to Zeus Xenios and the Jewish temple in Jerusalem to Zeus Olympios, the god depicted on the reverse of this tetradrachm. While the Samarians were pleased to have the goodwill of the Seleukid king, the Jews were outraged at the abomination in their temple, thereby sparking the celebrated revolt of Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers.
