Minerva, who is depicted on the reverse, was the favored deity of Domitian. He reportedly maintained a personal shrine of the goddess in his bedroom and is known to have founded a legion, Legio I Minervia in her honor. His reign also saw her depiction on the coinage in three types in addition to the one employed for this aureus.
