Reverse: DNO L-[E P A MЧL?], crowned bust of Leo III facing, wearing chlamys and loros, holding akakia; in right field, Δ. DOC -, but cf. 37-43; SB -, but cf. 1574-5; otherwise unpublished. A new variety of this Extremely Rare coinage. Very Fine. Estimate Value $400 - 500
The Aurora Family Collection, purchased in 1970.
This unique reverse is most similar to DOC 37-43. On DOC nos. 37-8, Leo is shown holding a globus cruciger instead of an akakia, with either a Δ (as here) or B in the right field. On our coin in place of the globus cruciger Leo holds an akakia. On DOC nos. 39-43, he is shown holding both a globus cruciger and an akakia.
